Rainy Days in Interlaken: Family-Friendly Adventures When the Weather Turns (Part One)
There’s nothing more disappointing than arriving on holiday, full of mountain plans, only to see rain suddenly appear on the forecast.
But before you panic… don’t.
First — mountain weather is often far better than it looks online. Honestly, don’t let Google weather fool you too quickly.
One of the best things about the Alps is that conditions can change fast, rain often doesn’t last as long as expected, and gloomy mornings can still turn into beautiful afternoons.
And second?
Even when the weather really does turn, there are still so many amazing adventures to be had in and around Interlaken.
So if the clouds roll in, here are some of our favourite family-friendly rainy-day ideas that still deliver fun, sightseeing, and plenty of Swiss adventure.
Top Tip: Waterfalls & Gorges (Rainy Day Gold)
If there’s one rainy-day mountain tip we always come back to, it’s this:
Lean into the weather.
Waterfalls and gorges are often at their most dramatic after rain, and many still offer enough shelter to feel like a great all-weather adventure.
Two of our favourites:
Beatus Caves (St. Beatus-Höhlen)
A brilliant mix of caves, waterfalls, pathways, and Swiss legend — giving you outdoor adventure without feeling fully exposed.
Trümmelbach Falls
An unforgettable experience and one of the region’s most impressive natural attractions, with powerful glacier waterfalls inside the mountain itself.
Both tick the boxes for:
Sightseeing
Outdoor fun
Family adventure
A proper Swiss experience
And crucially… they still feel exciting, even when the weather doesn’t.
The Steam Boat on Lake Brienz – Rainy Day Magic
Never underestimate a Swiss boat trip.
The steam boat on Lake Brienz is one of our absolute favourite rainy-day options, because the lake is stunning in almost any weather.
Misty mountains, dramatic scenery, cosy cabins… it somehow still feels magical.
And for families, the play cabin is a huge bonus.
For children over 6, it’s staffed and genuinely brilliant — turning the journey itself into part of the adventure.
And if the skies do clear?
You can always hop off and explore:
Giessbach Falls
Iseltwald
Even if you stay onboard the whole time, it’s still a fantastic day out.
Sportzentrum Grindelwald – The All-Rounder
When you need variety, Sportzentrum Grindelwald is a brilliant option.
This is one of those places that can genuinely save a rainy day because there’s so much on offer, including:
Swimming
Climbing
Skating
Indoor activities
It’s ideal when the kids need movement, and especially useful if the weather is looking more “all day” than “passing shower.”
Panda Freestyle & Orbit – Big Energy Burners
For bigger kids (or kids with serious energy to burn), these are fantastic.
Panda Freestyle
A trampoline hall that’s brilliant for letting kids properly move. The ultimate wet weather survival plan, not just trampolines but a fully equipped skate park with scooters, karts, skateboards and a load of other wheeled equipment that’s fun for every age. Owned and designed by the Panda freestyle and park guys so expertly designed for learning the best tricks, with high jumps and a gymnastic area.
Orbit
A brand-new indoor climbing facility that’s seriously impressive.
Both feel modern, exciting, and a little different from your standard rainy-day backup plan.
If you’re after high-energy, weather-proof fun, these are hard to beat. You can also book an instructor if you need a helping hand.
In the end…
Rain on holiday can feel frustrating — especially when you’ve been dreaming of mountain views and sunshine.
But in the Interlaken region, rainy days really don’t have to mean wasted days.
In fact, sometimes they lead to some of the most memorable adventures:
Waterfalls at full power, misty lake cruises, caves, climbing, swimming, and discovering places you may never have considered otherwise.
So don’t let the forecast ruin the fun.
Mountain weather is often full of surprises… and with the right plan, rainy days can still be packed with adventure.
And this is only Part One — next week, we’ll head further afield for even more brilliant rainy-day family day trips.
